Heating & Boiler Services in Middlesex County, MA

Most of New England Heats With Water, Not Air

Opus works on gas and electric boilers across Middlesex County and the Merrimack Valley, about 20 miles out from North Billerica. That covers installation, annual service, no-heat calls, steam systems and gas line work, all of it under one licensed heating contractor. Everyday plumbing is handled separately, under plumbing services. The person doing the work is a Massachusetts master plumber and gas fitter, and in January the phone still gets answered at two in the morning.

Hot Water Heat Is What This Company Was Built On

Residential Boiler Heating Systems and Hydronic Service

Middlesex County is boiler country. Radiators, baseboard and steam, in houses that were standing long before the equipment in their basements showed up. Ricky came up on those systems. He spent roughly 20 years in the trade, most of it union work on the older housing around Boston.

Opus works on gas and electric boilers. Both fuels, all the common brands, install through annual service. We don’t do oil. If your boiler burns oil, we’re the wrong call and we’ll say so on the phone instead of after a truck is in your driveway.

A cast iron boiler can run 25 to 35 years if it gets looked at once a year. That’s the whole argument for service.

Boiler Installation and Boiler Repair

What Each Boiler Service Covers

Boiler work splits two ways, and Rick does both himself.

Gas and electric boilers, sized to the house’s actual heat loss rather than matched to whatever was there before. Combi and high-efficiency options where the venting allows it. The permit, the inspection and hauling the old unit out are inside the quoted number.

Annual service, no-heat calls, leaks, noise and cold zones. Steam systems included, which is the part most local crews pass on. We’ll tell you when a repair is better money than a replacement.

What's Your Boiler Actually Doing?

No Heat, Noise, Leaks and Cold Radiators

People describe the symptom, not the failure. Here’s where each one usually goes.

Don’t wait until morning. Pipes start to matter after a few hours. Call 24/7 emergency help.

Usually air in the loop or a zone valve that stopped opening. That’s boiler repair, and it’s often a short visit.

Trapped air, low water, or on a steam system, condensate sitting where it shouldn’t. Worth booking annual boiler service before it gets louder.

Water on the floor under the unit

Could be a relief valve doing its job or a circulator seal giving up. Shut the emergency switch at the top of the cellar stairs and call.

An old boiler short-cycling is burning money every hour. Worth pricing a boiler replacement against another winter of repairs.

We bleed the upstairs radiators before we pack up. That’s where the air ends up, and it’s the call we’d otherwise be back for in two weeks.

We Pipe the Gas, Too

Gas Line Installation and Licensed Gas Fitting

A boiler is only as good as the gas feeding it. Opus runs a new gas line and repairs existing lines, under the same license that pulls the permit.

We run a new gas line for a boiler, a stove, a dryer, a grill or a standby generator. We repair and leak-test what’s already in the walls. And when an appliance comes out, we cap the line off properly rather than leaving it live.

Add a high-efficiency boiler and a tankless unit to a house that was piped for one appliance, and the existing line often can’t carry both. We run the BTU math before we quote, not after the equipment is already sitting in your cellar. If the main needs upsizing, that’s in the written number from the start.

Gas fitting is licensed work in Massachusetts for a reason. It gets permitted and inspected like everything else.

Steam Is the One Most Crews Skip

Gas, Electric, Steam and High-Efficiency Boiler Systems

Four kinds of systems come up out here, and Opus works on all four.

Gas boilers

Natural gas, the most common setup in the radius. Weil-McLain and Utica are what we install most, and we service Viessmann, Lochinvar, Buderus and Burnham along with the rest of the common names.

Electric boilers

Smaller footprint, no venting, no combustion air to worry about. A real option where gas isn’t at the street or a conversion doesn’t pencil out.

Steam systems

One pipe and two pipes. Steam is common in the older towns here and a lot of techs won’t touch it. Ricky will, and he’d rather service yours than sell you a reason to rip it out.

High-efficiency and combi

Condensing units and combi boilers that handle heat and domestic hot water in one box. They need the right venting and the right piping, and they need cleaning more often than a cast iron unit does.

One thing worth hearing before you shop. A lower bid on a boiler usually means the near-boiler piping isn’t in it, and that piping is what decides whether the system runs quiet and lasts. It’s the first thing we look at on a system somebody else installed.

Before You Book a Boiler Visit

Common Questions About Heating and Boiler Services

Yes, one pipe and two pipes both. Steam is common in the older housing around here and plenty of local techs won't service it, so this is work we actively take. If yours is banging, short-cycling or leaving upstairs rooms cold, that's usually fixable without replacing the system.

No. Opus works on gas and electricity only. It's an honest limit rather than a technicality, and we'd rather tell you on the phone than send someone who can't help. If you're thinking about moving off oil, the gas side of that conversion is work we do.

If natural gas is already at the house, gas is usually the cheaper fuel to run here. Electric makes sense where there's no gas service, where venting would be difficult, or in a smaller space. We look at what's already at the street and what the house needs before recommending either.

A cast iron boiler often runs 25 to 35 years with annual service, and a high-efficiency unit closer to 15 to 20. The rough line: once a repair costs more than about a third of a new install and the unit is past 20, replacement is usually the better spend. We'll give you both numbers and let you decide.

Yes. Gas fitting runs under the same license, so new line, repairs and leak checks are all handled in house. The permit and inspection are priced into the quote.

The Boiler Standard

Why Boiler Work Is the Job We Take First

A lot of crews would rather pull your boiler out and sell you a new one than actually work on it, and plenty won’t touch steam at all. Boilers are our first call, not our last. Rick services, repairs and replaces them himself, steam systems included, from a cold radiator in November to a full swap in January. When yours still has years left in it, you’ll hear that instead of a quote. He spent close to 20 years on New England systems, most of it union, working the same houses these boilers are sitting in today.

Our Customer Feedback

The Towns We Cover Across Middlesex County

Opus runs out of North Billerica and covers roughly a 20-mile radius, from the older neighborhoods of Woburn and Winchester to the affluent, boiler-heavy homes in Concord, Carlisle, and Lincoln. If your home is within about 20 miles, we most likely cover you.

Tips for Keeping Your Water Hot and Your Basement Dry

It’s about to get cold

Which pipes freeze first, what to do in October so they don’t, and what to do at two in the morning if one already has. Frozen and burst pipes  covers all of it.

You think something’s leaking

Stains, a meter still ticking with every tap shut off, a warm patch of floor. Leak detection finds where the water is actually coming from before anybody opens a wall.

Your boiler needs looking at

How often hot water and steam systems want servicing, what the annual visit includes, and which noises are worth calling about. Boiler service and repair  answers all three.
