Plumber in Concord, MA

Houses Older Than the Country They're In

Concord was incorporated in September 1635, which makes it the oldest town we cover by a wide margin. There are houses here on the National Register that were standing in the 1690s, and people live in them. None of them were built with plumbing or central heating, so everything in them was added later by somebody working around what was already there. That’s the job in this town. Opus covers 01742 out of North Billerica under a Massachusetts master plumber licence.

Everything Here Was Retrofitted

What Centuries of Additions Do to a System

No original design to work back to.

A house from 1740 got plumbing in maybe 1900, heating after that, and both have been altered several times since. There’s no logic to recover, only what previous trades decided on the day.

Almost everything runs on water, not air.

Radiators and baseboard, hot water and some steam. Concord is a boiler town, and a plumber here is a boiler plumber whether he planned on it or not.

Access is the constraint.

Narrow stairs, low cellars, finished rooms above, and in the historic districts a set of external considerations that don’t apply three towns over. Working out the route in is half the quote.

What We Get Called For in Concord

Plumbing and Heating Services Across the Town

Boiler service and repair here means annual service, no-heat calls and cold zones on equipment fitted into a building that was never designed to hold it.

Boiler replacement gets sized on what the house needs now rather than what it needed when the last one went in, and in a building insulated and re-glazed since, that is often a smaller unit than the one coming out.

Gas and electric, repair and replacement. Water heater installation in a house from the 1700s usually means a low cellar ceiling and a bulkhead for a door, which changes the day more than the unit does.

Leak detection traces water back before anything opens up, which counts for more in a house with plaster and lath somebody would rather not see cut into.

What the Town's Own Water Report Says

Hardness, Scale and What It Means for Your Tank

There’s a common assumption that Concord’s water is soft. The town’s own figures say otherwise, and it’s worth knowing which is true before you decide whether to bother flushing a water heater.

Concord's 2023 source water quality report puts average hardness at 80 parts per million, or 4.7 grains per gallon.

On the standard scale that’s moderately hard. Not extreme, but not soft either, and firmly in the range where scale accumulates in a tank heater over a decade.

Which means the usual advice applies here.

Sediment settles in the bottom of the tank, the anode rod wears through earlier than the rating suggests, and an annual flush is worth doing. On a tankless unit, the manufacturers’ annual descaling interval applies the same way it does elsewhere on our map.

What we won't do is pretend the water is worse than it is.

Nobody in this town needs a softener sold to them on the strength of a number that’s middling. If descaling once a year covers it, that’s what we’ll tell you.

Emergency Plumber in Concord

24 Hour and Same Day Calls

A person answers around the clock, not a machine.

Call now for water you can’t stop, sewage backing up, or no heat in freezing weather. A house that has stood here since the 1700s will survive a cold night. The pipe somebody ran through its outside wall two centuries later might not. Shut your main valve first. 24/7 emergency plumbing is answered by a person who can tell you what to shut off while you wait.

It can wait if it’s a dripping faucet, one slow drain or a running toilet, and we’ll say so rather than take the night booking.

Nearby Towns

Where Else We Work

East along Route 2A, where a plumber in Lexington sizes boilers around walls of glass, which is roughly the opposite problem to the one Concord sets.

North-east, made in 1729 out of land that had been Concord’s, where a plumber in Bedford works housing a good deal newer than the parent town.

North, and a district of Concord until 1805, where a plumber in Carlisle answers to a Board of Health with stricter well and septic rules than the state’s.

Concord borders four of the fourteen towns in our service areas, and three of them were made out of land that used to be Concord’s.

Questions From Concord Homeowners

Local Answers

Is Concord's water soft enough to skip flushing the water heater?

No. The town’s 2023 report puts it at 4.7 grains per gallon, which is moderately hard. That’s enough to build sediment in a tank over the years and enough to want a tankless unit descaled annually. It’s not extreme, but it isn’t nothing.

Our house is from the 1700s. Will you work on it?

Yes, and it’s a good deal of what we do here. The thing to understand is that nothing in a house that age was designed around plumbing, so the job is always partly about the route in and what previous trades left behind. We look properly before quoting rather than pricing off a photograph.

Do we need a softener?

Probably not on town water at this hardness. Annual flushing generally handles it, and a softener is real equipment with real ongoing cost. If you’re on a private well the answer can differ, and we’ll say so rather than sell you one either way.

Do you charge more to come to Concord?

No. The flat written price is the same in every town we cover, and the driving is inside it rather than added as a trip charge.

Do I need a permit for a boiler in Concord?

Yes, and only a licensed plumber can pull it. The town inspects afterwards and you should end up holding a signed card. Ours is priced into the quote rather than billed separately.

The Boiler Standard

Boiler Work Is the Job We Take First

A lot of crews would rather pull your boiler out and sell you a new one than actually work on it, and plenty won’t touch steam at all. In a town where almost every house runs on water rather than air, that narrows your options considerably. Boilers are our first call, not our last. Rick services, repairs and replaces them himself, steam systems included, and when yours still has years left in it you’ll hear that instead of a quote. He spent close to 20 years on New England systems, most of it union, working the same houses these boilers are sitting in today.

The Towns We Cover Across Middlesex County

Tips for Keeping Your Water Hot and Your Basement Dry

It’s about to get cold

Which pipes freeze first, what to do in October so they don’t, and what to do at two in the morning if one already has. Frozen and burst pipes  covers all of it.

You think something’s leaking

Stains, a meter still ticking with every tap shut off, a warm patch of floor. Leak detection finds where the water is actually coming from before anybody opens a wall.

Your boiler needs looking at

How often hot water and steam systems want servicing, what the annual visit includes, and which noises are worth calling about. Boiler service and repair  answers all three.
